چکیده

Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are currently designing a wearable/portable neutron detector. As an alerting mechanism, the device will transmit vibration to the wearer's skin in the presence of hazardous levels of neutron radiation. The present study was designed to help in the ergonomically correct body placement of the neutron detection device while providing numerical values for vibratory thresholds at the surface of various non-glabrous body loci. The aim of the study was to investigate the underlying effects of locus stimulated, amount of subcutaneous fat around a specific body site and gender on low frequency vibration thresholds. Thirty-six participants, who were categorised by both dichotomous body fat group (high or low) and gender, were tested at 24 loci orthogonally located around six body sites: head; neck; upper arm; wrist; waist; ankle. The results indicated that frequency threshold depends significantly on the locus stimulated (p=0.001). The nape of the neck had the greatest sensitivity to low frequency stimulations, while the loci around the waist were least sensitive. Also, body fat significantly affected ability to perceive vibratory stimuli (p=0.048), with the mean frequency threshold of the low body fat group lower than that of the high body fat group. There was no statistical difference in thresholds with gender.

Vibrotactile perception at glabrous and nonglabrous skin of fingers: repeatability of measurements and changes induced by acute vibration exposure.

OBJECTIVES We sought to determine the within-session and between-session repeatability of vibrotactile perception threshold (VPT) measurements and the response patterns in VPT induced by acute exposure to short-term vibration from grasping a vibrating handle, at both glabrous and nonglabrous skin of fingers. METHODS Baseline VPT was recorded twice at glabrous and nonglabrous side of fingers i...

Vibrotactile Presentation of Musical Notes to the Glabrous Skin for Adults with Normal Hearing or a Hearing Impairment: Thresholds, Dynamic Range and High-Frequency Perception

Presentation of music as vibration to the skin has the potential to facilitate interaction between musicians with hearing impairments and other musicians during group performance. Vibrotactile thresholds have been determined to assess the potential for vibrotactile presentation of music to the glabrous skin of the fingertip, forefoot and heel. No significant differences were found between the t...

Vibrotactile frequency discrimination in human hairy skin.

The human capacity for vibrotactile frequency discrimination has been compared directly for glabrous and hairy skin regions by means of a two-alternative, forced-choice psychophysical procedure in five subjects. Sinusoidal vibratory stimuli, delivered by means of a 4-mm-diam probe, were first used to obtain detection threshold values for the two skin sites, the finger tip and the dorsal forearm...

Vibrotactile threshold for hairy skin and its transformation into equivalent bone-conduction loss for the mastoid.

Vibrotactile thresholds for the glabrous skin of the hand and for the hairy skin of the arm are investigated as a function of frequency in the range from 40 to 2 000 Hz, using a heavy vibrator. These thresholds are expressed as equivalent bone-conduction loss and compared with vibrotactile thresholds determined with bone vibrators on the arm and mastoid for normally hearing and severely hearing...

Effect of changes in finger skin temperature on vibrotactile perception threshold.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to determine the influence of finger skin temperature on the vibrotactile perception threshold at fingertips, determined according to the method described in ISO 13091-1 standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS The effect of the cooling and warming of hands on vibration perception was investigated in 21 healthy women. Vibration perception measurements were condu...
